At any rate, most of the race course was to the north -- we were headed south to New Freedom. Today, the rolling countryside along the old Northern Central route is relatively undeveloped – so it's easy to imagine how scenery would have looked a hundred years ago. Our state may not be large, but it affords many unique running locations. The trail winds along the Gunpowder River, through quiet farmland. It continues north for 20 miles to the Mason-Dixon Line. Its passage through York County -- the Heritage Rail Trail runs through York County -- brought prosperity to the area's farmers, merchants, and manufacturers, and spurred the growth of communities such as New Freedom and Hanover Junction. The Northern Central Railroad (NCR) Trail is also sometimes referred to as the Torrey C Brown Rail Trail. With the fate of the 2020 outdoor season looking extremely unlikely, running will look a lot different for many of us over the course of the next few months. Gentle curves interrupt series of long open straightaways, and depending on the time of day and year you may find yourself the only person around for a mile (or longer).
