Both have their pros and cons. While it is also an incredibly long-running anime, and actually split into a second anime following a time jump, Naruto Shippuden, the story is complete, so someone could watch the whole thing and actually get to an ending, with the satisfaction of knowing what happens to Naruto and his friends. There are several reasons of why you should watch the first part (or at least read the manga): You will start by following the characters since their first days in the academy, and you will start to watch them grow every episode, you will know their life, their personalities, love some, and hate some, you will understand them and how they feel toward each other, and witness every single piece of event that made them arrive to what they are in the Shipudden part. For example, Shino has already been introduced to audiences hundreds of episodes ago, but Boruto: Naruto Next Generations takes things a step further by adding another dimension to his character. Well I've watched 135 episodes of Naruto, and only 52 episodes of Shippuden so far.
